Now with Alienware’s new line of thin gaming laptops there is a new port –the Alienware Graphics Amplifier port. What is a Alienware Graphics Amplifier port? The company isn’t saying whether it’ll offer a future eGPU, but pointed us to off-the-shelf Thunderbolt ones instead. What happened to the Alienware Graphics Amplifier?Īlienware has just confirmed to The Verge that it has discontinued the Alienware Graphics Amplifier external GPU, and so these laptops won’t need that proprietary port anymore. It appears the main reason behind the absence is that the Graphics Amplifier has been killed off. The company said this was because the eGPU would have been unable to take full advantage of the latest desktop GPUs and offered limited performance improvement over the laptops’ onboard graphics. Why did Dell discontinue Graphics Amplifier? When the Amplifier is plugged in, it bypasses the Alienware 13’s on-board GPU (the GTX 860M) completely. Currently, the Alienware 13 is the only laptop that can connect to the Amplifier, but presumably future revisions of the larger Alienware 14, 17, and 18 laptops will also have an Amplifier port.
